CHEM 523 - The Chemistry of Natural Products Semester Hours: Three A comprehensive overview of the origin of small molecule natural products will be presented. Sources of these molecules include plants, bacteria, and fungi. Organic chemistry will be emphasized in this course as the transformational process that occurs during biosynthesis. A mechanism-based approach will be used to assist in the understanding for each transformation. During this course the student will become familiar with not only the biosynthetic origin of natural products but also the impact on society and social developments as medicines, poisons, and dyes. The focus on chemical classes will include the study of polyketides, isoprenoids, and alkaloids.
