EDEN 463/563 - Teaching Literature Within the Curriculum Term Offered: Fall Semester Hours: Three This course will consist of units which survey literature appropriate for both children and adolescents, including examples of literature from various ethnic groups that reflect the diversity in today’s society. Attention is given to analysis, selection, and encouragement of the appreciation of quality literature, including appropriate award-winning literature for elementary and secondary students, emphasizing life-long reading. Both fiction and nonfiction texts will be critically examined, as well as the use of books in interdisciplinary instruction. This course is required for students seeking middle school language arts certification and/or secondary certification in English, as well as for students pursuing the Child Development major or Library Media Specialist minor. The course will fulfill the literature general education requirement for students seeking teacher certification, as well as for those majoring in Child Development. Note: Students taking this course for graduate credit must complete all graduate course requirements.
Prerequisite(s): ENGL 123 , EDUC 303 , and admission to the Teacher Education Program; or ENGL 123 and major in English.
