ECTA 323 - Curriculum, Assessment, and Data-Based Decision Making Term Offered: Fall, Spring This course provides an introduction to theoretical and practical applications of data-driven decision making, assessments, and curriculum planning for educators. Students will apply the components and organization of an effective curriculum utilizing the backward design process of Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe. The design process will be considered, beginning with a definition of what we as educators want our students to know and be able to do, followed by a clear description of the evidence that indicates real student understanding. Learning experiences and instruction based on the defined curricular goals will be planned. Assessments will be developed that insure student understanding. Students will apply generally accepted data-based decision procedures for generating, analyzing, and interpreting educational data. The course will outline procedures for designing or selecting, administering, scoring, and interpreting a variety of formal and informal assessment measures for use in schools. Students will develop a knowledge base of assessment strategies and tools, including how to collect information by observing classroom interactions, higher order questioning, and analysis, and the effect of class instruction on individual and whole class learning. A field experience is included in the scope of this course. Semester Hours: Three
