EDRD 433/533 - Foundations of Literacy Instruction for Early Childhood/Elementary: Seminar and Field Experience Term Offered: Fall, Spring Semester Hours: Three Course participants will understand and apply knowledge of major theoretical, conceptual, and evidence-based frameworks that describe how phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension work in tandem to create proficient readers. The course emphasizes the role of systematic and sequential phonics instruction as a foundation for literacy development and explores a scientifically based foundation of how the brain learns to read. Candidates will learn to apply this knowledge to effectively di Topics include the cognitive, socio-cultural, linguistic, and motivational influences on literacy and language development, providing a comprehensive foundation. The course includes a field experience component, allowing candidates to implement evidence-based instructional strategies and assessments to inform practice. Note: Students taking this course for graduate credit must complete all graduate course requirements.
Prerequisite(s): EDUC 203 , EDUC 303 , ECSP 433/533 , and admission to the Teacher Education Program for candidates seeking initial teacher certification. Prerequisite(s)/Corequisite(s): ECTA 323
