ENCP 433/533 - C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien Term Offered: Spring, Odd Years This course introduces students to the works of the literary group known as the Oxford Christians (or the Inklings). We will focus on both popular and lesser-known literary texts by the most famous and prolific members of this group: C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien. This class engages critical thinking by utilizing these writings to raise questions about a broad range of philosophical issues. To this end, students will familiarize themselves with various theoretical approaches to literature such as New Criticism, Ecological Criticism, Postcolonial Criticism, and other relevant critical theories. Students will also read essays, poetry, and scholarly works to consider the cultural, philosophical, and religious forces that shaped these writers as thinkers, artists, and friends.
