Undergraduate degree-seeking students must meet all assessment requirements for certification before degrees will be conferred for professional education programs, including the following: 1) passing the Professional Development Folio (semester prior to student teaching); 2) passing score on the required content assessment(s) for each area of certification for which recommendation is sought; and 3) achieving a composite score of 42 or better on the Missouri Educator Evaluation System (MEES) summative evaluation (completed during student teaching) for teacher candidates.

SECONDARY CERTIFICATION

Content areas for secondary certification (9-12) include the following: Business Education, English, Marketing Education, Mathematics, Social Science, and Speech/Theatre. Post-baccalaureate certification-only students (those who already hold a baccalaureate degree from a college or university with an approved teacher education program) may opt to pursue the categorical Biology or Chemistry certifications. Driver Education is available as an add-on area.

Note: Secondary candidates may opt to complete certification in one or two content areas. In addition, secondary certification may be combined with middle school certification in the same content area, earning subject-specific certification in grades 5-12.

SECONDARY EDUCATION MAJOR

Students must also complete a primary major in their certification content area: Business Education, English, Marketing Education, Mathematics, Social Science, or Speech/Theatre.

Note(s)


  • At least six hours of major and three hours of minor must be earned at Missouri Baptist University.
  • A grade of C or better (CR for zero credit classes) is required in courses taken to fulfill the requirements for a major or minor
    • Courses listed within this major are considered either professional education requirements or content area requirements by DESE; therefore, students must receive a grade of C or better (B or better for Gateway courses).
    • The GPA for content area requirements must be at least 2.500 and the GPA for professional education requirements must be at least 3.000.
  • If a substitution has been made, documentation of the signed approval and course number and title must be sent to the Records Office. Please include the date of the submission.
  • At least 24 of the last 32 hours must be taken at Missouri Baptist University to meet residency requirements.
  • Major GPA 2.500 or better.
  • Cumulative GPA of at least 2.50 on a 4.00 scale is required for degree conferral. The GPA for content area requirements must be at least 2.500 and the GPA for professional education requirements must be at least 3.000 for degree conferral and certification. Students must meet all requirements for certification before this degree will be conferred.
  • At least 42 total hours of Upper Division (54 for dual degree).
  • At least 120 total credit hours (144 for dual degree).

⁑ For students transferring with an AAT degree, the combination of Educational Psychology (AAT core requirement) and a course that covers child and adolescent growth and development (generally a prerequisite to Educational Psychology) will be substituted for 
EDPS 313 Psychology of Learning & Development .

Students need to make an appointment with their assigned School of Teacher Education advisor (see myMBU Access) or the Director of Teacher Education Certification Advising during the first semester of their junior year for a graduation check. 

Candidates pursuing secondary/middle combined certification must complete EDCL 411/511  in a middle school setting.
