Emphasizing creating a positive, literacy-rich environment, the course anchors its approach in both digital and print literacies. Critically examining and applying state and national literacy instruction standards is an integral component of this course. The course equips candidates to investigate core components of reading such as phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, comprehension, morphology, syntax, and vocabulary focusing on their role in supporting content area text comprehension. Exploration of the identification and implications of reading deficiencies, dyslexia, and other language disabilities informs content area instruction. Additionally, candidates develop competence in applying assessment strategies to enhance student learning. Incorporating a study of mandated assessments and best practices for the instruction of English Language Learners (ELL), the course requires a minimum of ten hours of field experience working with ELL students.
