EDRD 463/563 - Reading and Writing Strategies for Middle and Secondary Content Areas Term Offered: Spring Semester Hours: Three This course explores contemporary theories, practices, and evidence-based strategies for teaching reading and writing in middle and secondary school content areas. Teacher candidates will examine the role of oral reading and writing development in enhancing literacy skills, integrating reading fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing, while focusing on the interrelated components of literacy and interdisciplinary learning. Teacher candidates will learn to implement strategies that support foundational reading skills such as phonemic awareness, phonics, and morphology, as well as advanced comprehension and vocabulary skills. This course will also empower teacher candidates to design, adapt, and evaluate instructional approaches and materials to improve writing processes and orthographic knowledge. Teacher candidates will learn how to adapt instructional methods to support students with reading and writing deficits, including dyslexia, by employing evidence-based interventions. Teacher candidates will critically evaluate and select high-quality literary, multimedia, and informational texts to provide a motivating literacy program addressing diverse learning needs. Teacher candidates will also explore the assessment and evaluation of literacy skills, including understanding the purposes, strengths, and limitations of various informal and formal assessments. Students will gain competence in applying these assessments to improve student learning in alignment with state and national standards. A ten (10) clock hour field experience is included in the scope of this course. Note: Students taking this course for graduate credit must complete all graduate course requirements.
Prerequisite(s): EDUC 203 , EDUC 303 , ECSP 433/533 , EDRD 433/533 , ELED 453/553 , ECTA 323 , EDRD 443/543 , EDRD 423/523 , and admission to Teacher Education Program; or EDUC 203 , EDUC 303 , EDRD 433/533 , admission to Teacher Education Program, and a major in Middle Childhood Education or Secondary Education.
