Undergraduate degree-seeking students must meet all assessment requirements for certification before degrees will be conferred for professional education programs, including the following: 1) passing the Professional Development Folio (semester prior to student teaching); 2) passing score on the required content assessment(s) for each area of certification for which recommendation is sought; and 3) achieving a composite score of 42 or better on the Missouri Educator Evaluation System (MEES) summative evaluation (completed during student teaching) for teacher candidates.

K-12 CERTIFICATION

Subject-specific areas for K-12 certification include the following: Health Education, Music Education (Vocal/Choral or Instrumental), and Physical Education. (See the degree requirements section of the catalog for information on the BME degree and the Fine Arts Division for the major in Music Education.) Certification in Library Media Specialist and Special Reading are also available, but only at the graduate-level.

Students must meet all requirements for certification before this degree will be conferred, including passing the following: 1) all sections of the Missouri General Education Assessment (MoGEA); 2) the Professional Development Folio (semester prior to student teaching); 3) the Missouri Content Assessment(s) (MoCA) for each area of certification sought; and 4) a passing composite score on their summative evaluation in the Missouri Educator Evaluation System (MEES).

Students seeking certification will need to complete content area requirements in Health Education and Physical Education.

Required Assessments


  • Admission to Teacher Education Program: To be completed by second semester of sophomore year (or first semester for students transferring as a second semester sophomore class rank or higher) in conjunction with EDUC 201 .
    • Interview for admission to the Teacher Education Program
  • Students may not enroll in 400-level education classes until all requirements for admission have been met.
  • Approval to Student Teach: To be completed in the first semester of the senior year (or semester immediately preceding student teaching) with EDUC 401 .
    • Folio exit interview
    • Passing evaluation of completed Professional Development Folio (PDF)
  • Recommendation for Certification:
    • Passing score report(s) for the state mandated content assessment(s) in the certification area(s) for which recommendation for certification is being sought **
    • Passing composite score on the Missouri Educator Evaluation System (MEES) summative evaluation to be completed during Student Teaching or EDCL 4700

Note(s)


  • At least six hours of major and three hours of minor must be earned at Missouri Baptist University.
  • A grade of C or better (CR for zero credit classes) is required in courses taken to fulfill the requirements for a major or minor
    • Courses listed within this major are considered either professional education requirements or content area requirements by DESE; therefore, students must receive a grade of C or better (B or better for Gateway courses).
    • The GPA for content area requirements must be at least 3.000 and the GPA for professional education requirements must be at least 3.000.
  • If a substitution has been made, documentation of the signed approval and course number and title must be sent to the Records Office. Please include the date of the submission.
  • At least 24 of the last 32 hours must be taken at Missouri Baptist University to meet residency requirements.
  • Major GPA 3.000 or better.
  • Cumulative GPA of at least 2.50 on a 4.00 scale is required for degree conferral. The GPA for content area requirements must be at least 3.000 and the GPA for professional education requirements must be at least 3.000 for degree conferral and certification. Students must meet all requirements for certification before this degree will be conferred.
    • ​​(Students who have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 on a 4.00 scale may graduate with just their content area major if they do not meet all requirements for certification.)​
  • At least 42 total hours of Upper Division (54 for dual degree).
  • At least 120 total credit hours (144 for dual degree).
